Sally Simmons reviewed the importance of the Pima County Attorney race and outlined the focus of the position which includes setting policy for the whole office.Criminal justice reform, setting policy for plea bargains, cooperation with the courts on bail, diversion and treatment programs. The County Attorney also works with the courts to determine what to charge a person with and the Civil Division advises the county on issues such as auto accidents to zoning matters and environmental issues. It is a very powerful position.Sally introduced Laura Conover who is running for the office who will discuss her qualifications, vision and why she is running for this office.
Laura started by stating that she is a life-long Democrat and Native Tucsonian. She is bilingual.Laura made the following points regarding why she is running for the office:
60% of County revenue is spent on law and order which is 2/3 of the county budget. This one of the reasons why she wishes to address criminal justice reform.Reform will be better for the taxpayer and is more humane. Therefore, treatment for drug addiction and mental health should be the focus.
Laura feels that her experience as a criminal defense attorney, victim advocate and her public health training makes her qualified to address this reform.
Laura has experience managing attorneys as an appointee by judges on the Federal Court to supervise and represent 400 contract attorneys.
Laura has experience collaborating with other agencies such as the Marshalls Service.Laura is outcome driven and feels that her experience qualifies her for the position.
