Arizona leaders react to capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro
https://www.kold.com/2026/01/03/arizona-leaders-react-capture-venezuelan-leader-nicols-maduro/ Arizona Senator Mark Kelly released the following statement: “The President of the United States just overthrew a foreign ruler and explained to the American people that this is about taking control of the oil reserves of a foreign nation. He said that the U.S. will “run the country” until a proper transition can take place and went right into how U.S. oil companies will benefit from this takeover. He doesn’t understand the risks and costs involved with these poorly thought-out decisions that don’t make Americans any safer today than they were yesterday." “Nicolás Maduro is a brutal, illegitimate dictator who deserves to face justice. I want the people of Venezuela to be free to choose their own future, but if we learned anything from the Iraq war, it’s that dropping bombs or toppling a leader doesn’t guarantee democracy, stability, or make Americans safer. More often, it leads to chaos or drags the U.S. into a war and lengthy occupation. I don’t trust that this administration has a plan, timeline, or price tag for what comes next.” “Over the past year, Trump’s foreign policy has been reckless, chaotic, self-serving, and unconstitutional. Congress should vote this week to reassert its authority on behalf of the American people before he oversteps again. I also want to recognize the professionalism and skill of the American service members involved in this operation. While I don’t agree with the administration’s justification for this, I’m thankful that no service members were killed or seriously injured.” Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego stated: “There is no justification for the United States to be at war with Venezuela. I lived through the consequences of an illegal war sold to the American people with lies. We swore we would never repeat those mistakes. Yet here we are again. The American people did not ask for this, Congress did not authorize this, and our service members should not be sent into harm’s way for another unnecessary conflict." Representative Juan Ciscomani stated: “Earlier today, American service members carried out a decisive operation aimed at disrupting a narco-terror regime responsible for years of harm to the United States. Nicolás Maduro and the criminal network he leads have fueled the flow of illegal drugs into the United States, costing countless American lives.” “President Trump’s decisive action marks a critical step toward disrupting these deadly trafficking operations and pushing back against a destabilizing regime that has aligned itself with some of our most dangerous adversaries, including Iran, China, Hezbollah, and Hamas. This action sends a clear signal that the United States will not allow narco-terrorism or hostile foreign influence to threaten our security or our hemisphere.” “We are deeply grateful to the American heroes who executed this mission with courage and precision. Decisive action is how we keep America safe.” |
Indivisible on Trump’s Attack on Venezuela:
‘Wildly illegal, immoral, and irresponsible.’ Jan 3, 2026 Washington, D.C. — Today, Leah Greenberg, Indivisible’s co-founder and co-executive director, released the following statement on Trump’s attack on Venezuela and capture of President Maduro, which many lawmakers, and leading publications believe to be illegal: “Trump’s attack on Venezuela and kidnapping of Maduro is wildly illegal, immoral and irresponsible. Just days after bombing Nigeria, the ‘Peace President’ just put the lives of millions of people at risk by bombing Venezuela and capturing their head of state with no authorization from Congress or cited evidence of legitimate threat to the United States. This should be condemned by anyone who believes in national sovereignty and domestic or international law. “A war with Venezuela would escalate violence, destabilize the region, and place U.S. servicemembers and civilians in unnecessary danger, all in service of Trump’s authoritarian ambitions. “The power to declare war belongs to Congress and the American people. Trump has once again taken power that's not his. He is attempting to drag the country into war by decree, all while treating the presidency like a throne. Congress must act immediately to stop these illegal strikes and hold the Trump regime accountable. No Kings, No War.” |
