Target has faced much criticism for abandoning their DEI efforts that they once seemed to proudly stand behind. Rather than standing up for their employees and customers they decided to bend a knee to Trump's demands for everyone to end their DEI initiatives.
In response, Pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant began calling for a Target "Fast" for lent, but when the company ignored calls to stand by their DEI initiatives, Bryant called for a permanent boycott (and others like The People's Union USA and the Latino Freeze Movementhave followed suit to help the movement grow further). Bryant reminded his church community that what finally led to the 1956 U.S. Supreme Court decision declaring segregation unconstitutional was not decision-makers listening to speeches, but rather it was the financial impact the Montgomery Bus Boycott (with black citizen's mass refusal to ride the bus for more than a year) had that was instrumental.
As with the Montgomery bus boycott, Target is now starting to feel the impact of lost customers and declining share values. Boycotts work when they are sustained and participated in by enough consumers. A day or a week here are there are not enough -- sustained action is needed and Pastor Bryant appears to be helping make that happen.
A number of participants in the Target boycott are now recognizing how much power they have to make change and are also recognizing how much extra money they save when they shop more consciously. We hope you will join the movement and see how much power you also have.
Consider supporting businesses such as Costco who stood strong against pressures to dismantle their DEI programs or better yet, find smaller locally owned businesses who support building a strong, diverse, local community. And whenever making purchase also ask if it is a need or a want. If it is something you can live without consider using your dollars instead to support your local community by instead doing something like donating to a local library, supporting a non-profit, investing in a local start-up entrepreneur, etc.
