The Trump administration approved an 8 billion dollar merger between two large media companies -- Paramount (parent company of CBS) and Skydance. But only after Paramount seemed to cave to unreasonable demands by Trump, even paying what is being alleged by some to possibly be a bribe. How could a company get away with possibly paying a bribe to the president of the United States for government approval of their desired merger? By settling Trump's meritless law suit against CBS's Sixty Minutes in which they paid millions to Trump and his Presidential library fund. One of the other potential demands to seal the merger deal? Firing Stephen Colbert, unexpectedly cancelling his show (to end next year) shortly before this merger deal went through.
Senator Elizabeth Warren has said of the FCC approval of the Paramount - Skydance merger: “Bribery is illegal no matter who is president. It sure looks like Skydance and Paramount paid $36 million to Donald Trump for this merger, and he’s even bragged about this crooked-looking deal. I’ve been ringing the alarm bell for months, launching a Senate investigation into possible corruption, and this merger must be investigated for any criminal behavior. It’s an open question whether the Trump administration’s approval of this merger was the result of a bribe.”
This article https://www.commondreams.org/news/fcc-approves-paramount-skydance-merger includes a video from Warren and more in-depth details if you want to take a deeper dive. She's calling on all of us to stand up to this type of corruption. One way we can all stand up is to say no to all things Paramount/Skydance.
If we give our dollars to Paramount/CBS that basically tells them, we're OK with you acting like this - throwing free speech and our democracy under the bus so that you can further enrich and empower yourselves. We can choose to send them a different message by withholding our money from them.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Cancel your Paramount+ subscription: see directions on how to do that here.
Stop watching CBS and a lot of other stations -- want to see what happens when our government doesn't control monopolistic companies then check here for everything Paramount owns)
Planning to go to the movies? Avoid Paramount Pictures films like the recently released "The Naked Gun"
If you care about free speech, if you care about our democracy, and if you care about the rule of law, it is time take action. As more and more of our institutions cave to the whims of Trump to gain favors from his administration we are quickly sliding (if not already nearly there, according to some) into autocracy. Paramount is a prime example of how institutions and the laws and norms that uphold them begin to crumble.
