While the Boycott and Build group is not organizing on-the-ground protests against local businesses who support Ciscomani, we do encourage you to make sure local businesses understand that you will not support them if they do not share your democratic values. We provide contact information below (keep scrolling) for you to make your voice heard via calls and e-mail/mail.
Voting with our dollars can be done anonymously, and for some of us that feels very important right now. And the Boycott and Build group loves that we can be doing a silent, peaceful act of activism every single time we spend or invest a dollar (or how we choose not spend). When we all become the silent majority with our dollars, we will have a very loud and impactful collective voice. For others making a call or sending a postcard or e-mail is another step that can easily be done from the comfort of home.
And for those wanting to do even more, getting in the street to help inform people about the connections some of our local businesses have to politicians like Ciscomani (and the destructive policies he supports) is yet another peaceful action that can be taken. For those of you looking to take this more visible peaceful role against local businesses (we all saw how powerful the Tesla TakeDown actions were and continue to be!), there are several groups involved in protests and other peaceful acts of non-compliance. If you have an interest in learning more about business protest opportunities (as well as many other pro-democracy events) we encourage you to sign up for Take Action Tucson's newsletter and keep an eye on their calendar of events.
Local businesses and/or their owners who have supported Ciscomani with funding and endorsements need to hear from us. They need to know their customers/potential customers expect them to withdraw their support for Ciscomani if they expect us to shop at their business. And they need to know that we want them to pressure Ciscomani to stand up for the interests of his constituents here at home in AZ versus the interests of far away billionaires.
Below is a short list of names, addresses, and phone numbers, along with a sample letter or phone script. We have also included some bullet points that you may want to add about how Ciscomani's supposed "pro-small business" positions are really only about his millionaire business buddies.
McDonald's/Paul Dias local franchise holder (20+ locations): Write to his office at 6422 E Speedway Blvd UNIT 124 or call (520) 577-0476.
HSL Properties and Foundation Board: Big local real estate developer (Dove Mountain, etc.) (520) 322-6994 / 3901 E Broadway Blvd,Tucson, AZ 85711
Contact any other business you know support Ciscomani too.
If you know that a specif business owner does not support Ciscomani please be sure to thank them for that and let them know you only support businesses who do not support Ciscomani.
Script: Hi, I live in your community and am a potential customer of your business. I am calling/writing to ask you to no longer support Juan Ciscomani. His recent votes have shown that he is not a "Pro-small business moderate" as he pretends to be, but votes for agendas made up in Washington that are designed to help billionaires and that actually hurt his constituents. (Include if you wish some examples from the list below about how his votes will hurt business). I will not support businesses that support politicians that hurt our community.
List of examples you might use:
Small businesses won't take advantage of retroactive R&D expense deduction.
Business that have electric or hybrid vehicles will pay higher registration fees.
Small business owners with health insurance purchased through ACA will face more barriers to enrollment and doubling of premiums due to expiration of federal premium support.
Due to rising public debt, the borrowing rates will go up. A small business that needs a loan will pay more for it and it might not qualify for a loan.
Business expense deduction will rise from 20% to 23% of business income, but this rise will not offset higher costs in other areas.
It will be harder to qualify as a small business by the gross receipts test. The qualification will be based on 5 tax years, instead of 3 tax years.
ACTIONS TO TAKE IN ADDITION TO BOYCOTTING LOCAL BUSINESSES WRITE LETTERS AND EMAILS TO CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE: Some Chambers of Commerce have supported Ciscomani with funding and endorsements. Contact them directly to let them know that we, the local customers who support Chamber member's businesses, want them to withdraw their support from Ciscomani. Highlight that Ciscomani's supposed "pro-small business" positions are really only about his millionaire business buddies.
AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT TO SAY: Hi, I live in your community and believe in supporting local businesses, especially small businesses. I am writing to ask you to no longer support Juan Ciscomani and encourage your business members to stop their support as well.
Ciscomani's recent votes have shown that he is not a "Pro-small business moderate" as he pretends to be. He votes for agendas made up in Washington that are designed to help billionaires and that hurt his constituents. For example, small business owners with health insurance purchased through ACA will face more barriers to enrollment and doubling of premiums due to expiration of federal premium support because of the OBBB (One Big Beautiful Bill -- also known as One Big Ugly Bill). And that’s just one of many examples.
Arizona is one of the hardest hit states with loss of federal funding due to the OBBB ($34 billion, or 18% of the state budget), losses that can hurt businesses by loss of services or local tax increases. I don't believe the Chamber of Commerce should support politicians that vote in ways that hurt our community, especially when they pretend to be supportive.
