SUBMITTED AS: HOW TO RESTORE ELECTION CONFIDENCE by Thea Chalow
HEADLINE BY PAPER: How Republicans can restore voter confidence
Arizona's Republican lawmakers lead the nation in proposing laws that would restrict and suppress our ability to vote. They claim these laws are needed to restore public confidence because many voters believe Donald Trump's false assertions that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election due to widespread fraud.
Rather than permanently stain the Republican Party as being a tool of voter suppression, there is a better way to restore election confidence. Tell the truth.
Say simply and clearly that Donald Trump was lying when he claimed the election was rigged. Say that the courts found, and evidence shows, that we had a free and fair election.
The best way to restore voter confidence in our election system is to tell the truth.

Faulty Logic by Cathy Hemler and Steph Bader
Senator Sinema says she opposes eliminating the filibuster because it “promotes bipartisanship.” In fact it does the opposite. In an ideal world her concept might have merit. But in today’s cutthroat political arena it is a pipedream, and could end up stonewalling any Biden policies that might actually help the country recover from Covid, the economic downturn, and Trump.
Republicans have learned that by using the filibuster they can make a Democratic administration look like it is not delivering on campaign promises, thereby giving Republicans ammunition to win elections. The 2010 election, in which Republicans netted a 63 seat gain, is a perfect example. And it therefore behooves them to use and abuse it at every opportunity to strangle all Democratic legislation and use the resulting inaction to defeat their majority.
So I beg you Sen. Sinema: Get real and support your party’s incredibly important agenda by ceasing your opposition to eliminating the filibuster.

Tucson Opinion: Finchem's donors are part of the problem by Eileen Hollowell
Mark Finchem is an embarrassment to the people of Arizona. His conspiracy theory politics and association with radical right fringe groups resulted in his promoting baseless claims of voter fraud. Paid by Donald Trump’s campaign, he hosted a bogus hearing so Rudy Giuliani could promote Trump’s “Big Lie.” Then, using campaign donors’ dollars, he flew to Washington, D.C. and participated in “Stop the Steal” events which culminated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that killed five people.
Finchem did not materialize cut from whole cloth. He has been financially supported by “respectable” members of our community. Behind closed doors, these movers and shakers may roll their eyes at his cowboy costumes, but they willingly wrote campaign donation checks because as one of the Republican candidates in Legislative District 11, Finchem was expected to support business-friendly legislation. Given that Finchem now rails against “oligarchs” and applauds interfering with “their game and their cashflow [sic],” perhaps they’ve been duped.
Fletcher McCusker, indefatigable downtown Tucson booster and chair of Rio Nuevo, donated $1,000 to Finchem. Did he really intend to support someone who is with the Oath Keepers, the radical right militia group that’s been implicated in the planning and organizing of the Jan. 6 insurrection?
What about Michael Kasser whose family name now graces the Tucson Museum of Art’s Kasser Family Wing of Latin American Art. He donated $1,000 to Finchem. Has that money gone to pay for the lawyer Finchem needed due to “the threat of criminal prosecution?”
We know Humberto Lopez of HSL Properties has greatly polished his reputation lately with major philanthropic donations to help Tucson’s homeless. But, as a board member of Pinnacle West Capital Corporation his legacy is being tarnished by his donation to Pinnacle West PAC which gave $3,000 to Finchem.
Finchem’s top funder is Earl Kendrick, owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Along with his wife Randy, the Kendricks donated over $10,000 to Finchem in 2019-2020. Oddly, they did this despite the fact that four years earlier, Randy donated money “to fund Republican opponents of Donald Trump and a political action committee that aimed to portray Trump as reckless, prior to the (2016) primary.” If they thought Trump was reckless four years ago, what about now? Why did they give money to Finchem, who has tried to keep Trump in power by what turned into violent means?
Finchem’s obsession with conspiracy theories would almost be laughable were it not for the clear and present danger they represent. From his early claims that Barack Obama was seeking to establish a “totalitarian dictatorship” to his endless repetition of Trump’s baseless election fraud lie, Finchem is an acolyte in the cult of conspiracies.
His radical right rhetoric should not be financially supported by individuals who claim to care about our community. Every reasonable and responsible citizen who gave him campaign funds should demand a refund, disavow Finchem and his Stop the Steal fantasies. Failure to do so, means that they either agree with Finchem’s seditious fantasies or they don’t care what Finchem stands for as long as he supports Gov. Doug Ducey’s business friendly agenda, including more tax cuts during a pandemic that has devastated many of their fellow Arizonans.

Protect Your Right to Vote by Jackie Marshall and Di Alexander
Your right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, a government of, by and for the people. However, since their session began mid-January, our state legislators have already proposed 39 bills to restrict voting and obstruct our elections. These bills include requiring mail-in ballots to be notarized and hand delivered, increasing voter ID requirements, requiring mandatory purging of voter rolls, requiring in-person voter registration in government buildings, and allowing legislators access to private voter information, among others.
Protect your right to vote by urging your members of Congress to support the “For the People Act” (HR1) which would prevent voter suppression by establishing automatic voter registration, allowing same-day registration, forbidding improper purging of voter rolls, preventing racial and partisan gerrymandering, and providing public funding for elections to reduce corporate influence, as well as “The John Lewis Voting Rights Act” (HR4) which would require states with a history of voter suppression to receive preclearance before making changes to their voting processes, including widespread poll closures and prohibitive voting requirements.

Sinema Opposes Ending Filibuster by Margo Nichols
On January 3rd, I read that Kyrsten Sinema is one of two Democratic Senators to oppose ending the filibuster and that she is not open to changing her mind. What? Why? Ending the filibuster is essential to passing critical legislation to improve health care, economic justice, protection of the environment, sound immigration policy and much more. Frankly, I am more than disappointed in Senator Sinema; I am embarrassed that I worked for her election and continued to support her when her allegiance to the causes of small “d” democracy were questioned. The Republicans in Congress, like their counterparts in Phoenix, are interested only in holding onto power by any means, including overturning the will of the voters! They wield power in support of power! Trusting them, giving them the benefit of the doubt in the name of bipartisan unity, is a fool’s errand. It will not advance the needs of the majority for whom the McConnell’s of the world hold disdain. Senator Sinema must reconsider, or many voters will!

A National Wake-Up Call by Jackie Marshall
The assault on our Capitol by a mob of insurrectionists who desecrated our halls of Congress, terrorized our representatives, and imperiled our democracy has been a shocking wake-up call. In its aftermath, twenty corporations withdrew their funding of legislators who betrayed their oaths of office. Three social media sites closed the accounts of those who promoted and incited violence.
Our new administration will address and redress many of the ills that plague us, but they cannot do it alone. Mainstream media outlets need to evaluate their role in amplifying falsehoods and spreading propaganda these past five years and recommit to their duty to publish the facts and disseminate the truth. Our policing agencies need to police themselves and recommit to their duty to serve and protect us all. We the people must speak out against injustice, demanding that those who betray their duty are held accountable. We must speak up in defense our democratic ideals and we must act to preserve them. We must be the change we seek.

U.S. Coronavirus Response Abysmal by Lea Anderton
Why does the U.S. lead in cases and deaths from the Coronavirus? According to the Eurasia Group, a New York based political risk consultancy, healthcare management, political response, and financial policy response have made the difference. In countries with universal healthcare the whole population could get tested, go to the doctor or hospital without fear of running up large medical bills. In the U.S. 87 million people have no insurance and many who got laid off no longer have it. Germany, by contrast, has universal healthcare and gave aid to businesses so they did not have to lay workers off. We have lagged from the start with a shortage of medical supplies and PPE, no coordination of testing, contact tracing, or masterplan for distribution. Forty million Americans are in risk of eviction or foreclosure and a moratorium will not solve the problem. We need a large subsidy to just get people back to normal. The new administration seems to have a better plan, I hope it comes to fruition.

It's Time to End the Filibuster by Misty Atkins
Our Arizona Legislators in Washington need to stand behind their constituents and support an end to the filibuster. Already Republicans have begun their mantra to obstruct any legislation from the Biden administration, regardless of what it might be. They know they can use the filibuster to stop every piece of legislation that comes its way. Our country is in a crisis right now. We are all looking to Congress to pass measures and adopt policy that help end economic disparity, provide fair health care, and protect our environment. None of this can get done without Congress making its way back to a functioning entity. We have had ten years of inaction on the part of the Senate. It’s time to get substantial and meaningful policy passed. It begins with an end to the filibuster.

Desecration of the Capitol by Rachel Rulmyr
Today, I am weeping my eyes out watching in real time the destruction of our democracy and our country and desecration and siege of our Capitol. I am angry; I am scared; I am appalled at what I am viewing.
Kelli Ward, Chairwoman of the Republican Party along with State Senator Kelly Townsend, State Representative, Mark Finchem, who posted himself laughing and enjoying himself in the middle of an insurrection of our democracy, and Congressional Representative Paul Gosar are seditionists and right wing extremists who participated in a legislative coup trying to overturn the results of the most fair and free election in history.
Republicans who have supported and enabled the most corrupt and despicable president in the history of the United States for the past 4 years should be ashamed.
I have no doubt that Mark Finchem is a clear and present danger to our democracy who supports domestic terrorism. He continues to promote lies and conspiracy theories and dishonors his oath of office and betrays his constituents. He must either resign immediately or the voters of LD11 must recall him from his elected position.
I pray for President Biden and his administration to put the pieces of our country back together so that our children, grandchildren and the rest of the world can begin to respect us again.

Finchem is Responsible for the Violence By Carol Fiore
He was there, but he says he didn’t go inside the Capitol building. He says he never engaged in the violence or looting. He says he isn’t responsible for the deaths. But LD 11 Rep. Mark Finchem flew to D.C., after months of posting about the “stolen” election, with the express purpose of overturning the will of the American people. This is called sedition.
Mr. Finchem is famous all over the state as a conspiracy theorist who peddles voter suppression bills and far-right fringe theories. He feels no need to respond to constituents if they do not agree with him, instead name-calling and resorting to intimidation, eventually blocking people (myself included).
Like the president, Mr. Finchem is responsible for the violence because he helped to fuel it on social media. His attempts to overthrow the government disqualify him from holding public office, and he should be removed immediately.

Insurrectionists Must Not Be Seated in Arizona Legislature by Margo Nichols
For several weeks, a group of Republican Arizona legislators and legislators-elect publicly advocated the overthrow of a free and fair election, and in some cases, encouraged violence.
Representative Mark Finchem of my LD 11 district is one of them. He does not even pretend to represent me or any of the 180,000 voters in our district who voted in the November election, unless, of course, they are advocating to overturn their own votes (and his election!!) by denying the fairness of that election. It is beyond maddening to have to see the rabble rousing stuff he says in his online and newsletter postings.
Wednesday, an armed mob of domestic terrorists attempted an insurrection against the elected government of the United States. Finchem was among them!! He now claims he did not enter the Capitol building, and if he were not an elected representative of this state, due to again take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the State of Arizona and the United States of America, that might lessen his culpability. But Finchem has published support for the use of force to change a lawful election. He did so before, during, and after the riot and insurrection that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. He and the other Arizona lawmakers deliberately stoked the flames of this attempted coup and continue to show public support.
These actions are a direct violation of their upcoming oath of office to defend the Constitution and the people of our state. I am calling on the Legislature to vote to expel those who supported the Jan. 6th coup attempt

Finchem Must Go by Margo Nichols
As upsetting as the spectacle on January 6th was, as disturbing as the actions of four Arizona Congresspeople was in the electoral count, the craven behavior of Mark Finchem (R) LD11 is appalling. He is flying high now because Trump read aloud his letter at a Georgia rally. He was in the DC mob! He proudly tweeted the same seditious sentiments as came from Trump. Today, with his followers being removed from Twitter, he is moving his online presence to Parler, a social networking service which has a significant user base of Donald Trump supporters, conspiracy theorists, and right-wing extremists. It’s a site to which few of us who try to counter his misinformation will follow, a site which is almost certainly monitored by the FBI. Finchem is a member of OathKeepers, a radical extremist group also monitored by the FBI as a hate group. With everything in our power, those of us who truly wish to save our country must see that he is gone from the legislature.

WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE. . . (this headline was published in the digital edition of TUCSON.COM) By Thea Chalow
Was Finchem legitimately elected? (this headline was in the print publication
Displaying what appears to be a loss of touch with reality, on December 4, LD-11 State Rep. Mark Finchem claimed on Steve Bannon’s internet show that “between 62 and 67 percent of Arizonans voted for the president." Unfortunately for Finchem, our Republican governor certified that Trump actually got 49.06 percent of the vote. Finchem appears to have deluded himself into believing the presidential election was off by 13 to18 percent.
Then isn't it odd that Finchem hasn’t questioned the much closer results of the voting for LD-11 representatives? In that 3-way race, a mere 4.6% of votes separated the top and bottom vote getters (Bret Roberts, 34.7%; Finchem, 34.4%; and Felipe Perez, 30.1%). If Finchem truly believed election results were 13%-18% off, he’d have to consider that perhaps he or Roberts lost and Felipe Perez won.
Apparently, Finchem's fantasy doesn't extend to the belief that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Your Vote Has Power. Use It by Jacolyn Marshall and Karen Harris
Your vote can restore dignity and the rule of law throughout our government and its agencies by electing candidates who will ensure that our civil and human rights are universally protected. Your vote can save lives by electing candidates who will support affordable healthcare for all of us who depend on it. Your vote can revitalize our economy by electing candidates who will reinvest in small businesses and the public schools and colleges that support them. Your vote can protect our increasingly fragile environment from further damage by electing candidates who support clean, renewable energy. Your vote can increase our national security by electing candidates who will regain the respect of our allies and reclaim our voice in international affairs and peacekeeping. Your vote has the power to make the world a better, safer place for all of us. Now more than ever, we need you to exercise the power of your vote.

Do Republicans Love America? by Liz Callahan
If Republicans would apply the same creativity and energy to developing policies that speak to the needs of everyday Americans that they do to stealing Supreme Court seats and manipulating elections, they might actually serve the America they claim to love. As it is, they only win when they cheat. And make no mistake about it, voter suppression in all its varied forms, gerrymandering, lying about widespread voter fraud, derailing the Census are all ways in which they attempt to work around the Constitutionally-protected idea of one person, one vote. We need two parties in this country. We are facing unprecedented challenges that demand new ideas, robust dialogue and civil discourse. Instead, we have Democrats working hard to address the most pressing issues and Republicans figuring out more and more outrageous ways to game the system. What a disgrace.

Vote like our democracy depends on you! By Margo Nichols and David Pearl
The claim that the United States political system is "a republic, not a democracy" is often found in conservative screeds to put down those concerned about threats to our democracy. Extremist Republicans, like LD11 State Representative Mark Finchem, allege that since the Founding Fathers did not design a pure democracy we cannot lay claim its underlying principles.
Conservative extremists prefer to ignore that our democracy, like every other on earth, is a republic insofar as citizen voters choose elected officials to represent them; we are not ruled by nobles which the Founding Fathers feared. In Arizona, attempts by elected officials like Finchem to use the “republic, not democracy” mantra are merely an attempt to suppress voters rights and citizens' constitutionally permitted initiative and referendum processes when these efforts run contrary to the extremists' views.
In LD11, don't waste votes on extremist Republicans Mark Finchem or Bret Roberts. Vote for the one candidate who actually believes in democracy—Felipe Perez, MD

Republicans Need to Listen to the People by Margo Nichols
The Republican Party consistently refuses to listen to the American people. They don’t listen to us when 64% of us say we want stricter gun laws. They don’t listen to us when 70% of us say we believe women should have the right to reproductive freedom and safe abortions. They don’t listen to us when 67% of us say Black lives matter and people have a right to assemble and protest. They don’t listen to us when 79% of us say “dreamers” must be allowed to remain and apply for citizenship. They don’t listen to us when 65% of us say the popular vote should replace the Electoral College. They don’t listen to us because they believe they and their billionaire donors know better than the majority of the American people. Show them they are wrong. Vote Democratic in this election.

Vets Against Trump by Patrick Callahan
As a Viet Nam-era Navy veteran, I was deeply offended by Trump’s characterization of those who served as suckers and losers. His disdain for the men and women who answered their country’s call to serve in Viet Nam – 58,000 of whom made the ultimate sacrifice – is an extension of the contempt with which he holds the entire idea of service. This is a man who has served only himself for his entire life. He has no honor, he is loyal to no one, and the idea of putting his life on the line for another person, no less an ideal, is completely beyond his ken. He is the polar opposite of the type of person we need as Commander-in-Chief. Trump is unfit, unhinged and must be voted out – by a landslide. This veteran is voting for Joe Biden, the right man for the job.

MAKE SURE YOUR BALLOT COUNTS By Thea Chalow and Di Alexander
With misinformation circulating about mail-in ballots, voters need facts. Follow these tips to make sure your ballot counts.
1) Use blue or black ballpoint pen to mark your ballot. No pencil. No markers that "bleed” through paper.
2) When the ballot says, “Vote for not more than 2,” (or 3) there’s no need to cast that many votes. Your favored candidate has the best chance of winning with a single vote. For example, in LD11 if your goal is to see Felipe Perez, MD become State Representative, vote for only one candidate - Perez. Don’t vote for Finchem or Roberts since that would raise their total and the two highest vote getters win.
3) If mailing your ballot, do NOT put a first-class stamp on the outer envelope.
4) If you prefer to skip postal delivery, return your ballot to an Early Voting Site, a Curbside Drop-off site, or an Election Day Polling Location. Times and places are listed at the Pima County Recorders office website.

A Chance For Real Change in LD 11 By Eileen Hollowell
LD 11, which spreads from Oro Valley to Maricopa has more registered Republicans than Democrats. Probably because it is a “safe” Republican District its current representatives are right wing idealogues. Sen Vince Leach regularly reposts debunked Q Anon conspiracy theories. Rep Mark Finchem is a member of the Oath Keepers—an anti-government militia movement. Rep Bret Roberts rails against all efforts to slow the spread of Covid. This year independent voters, Democrats and Republicans who do not embrace extremism have an opportunity to elect JoAnna Mendoza—a military veteran who grew up in Eloy- to the Arizona Senate. Felipe Perez—a native Arizonan who put himself through medical school and works at El Rio Clinic is the only Democrat running for the Arizona House in LD11. They will both focus on the needs of the citizens of LD 11 not right wing conspiracy theories. Vote blue and remember to only cast one vote for the House—do not waste a vote on Finchem or Roberts!

WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP by Thea Chalow
From our President down to local representatives, Republicans have failed to make protecting our health a priority. Trump downplayed COVID to buoy the stock market. Ducey reopened without following published guidelines. LD11 State Representative Mark Finchem sought to redefine COVID cases so only hospitalized patients counted—ignoring (as did our President) that infected people with no symptoms can easily spread this disease.
In sharp contrast, Dr. Felipe Perez, MD, is the only candidate for LD11 State Representative with a clear pandemic recovery plan. A family physician working the front lines, he knows what's needed to deal with this pandemic. I trust him to make sound data-driven decisions that protect workers and residents of all ages. If we elect responsible and responsive representatives, we can beat this pandemic and re-energize our economy. In LD11, I plan to give one single vote to Perez and no votes to incumbents Republicans Mark Finchem or Bret Roberts. The time is right for new leadership in LD11.

Climate change denial has no place in Tucson By Carol Fiore
The West is on fire. The climate crisis is not a far-away event: it is here, it is now, and immediate action is critical. Many of our leaders agree.
The Climate Reality Project, Baja Arizona Chapter (based in Tucson) commends Mayor Romero and the Tucson City Council for their unanimous, bold decision to adopt a Climate Emergency Declaration. This historic action sets a goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, and as a key component focuses on social justice.
My group looks forward to working with community leaders to build a healthy, resilient, and vibrant clean energy economy that works for all of us. The most successful cities are bringing everyone into the transformation. It is past time to move away from dirty energy.
We have much work to do, but together, we can address the climate crisis.

Feeling the Heat by Jacolyn Marshall
We are running out of time to effectively combat the ever-worsening effects of carbon emissions in our state. Only the three candidates for Corporation Commissioner support clean energy: Bill Mundel, Shea Stanfield, and Anna Tovar. Why is it in every Arizonan’s best interest to elect them?
Carbon emissions continue to pollute our air, jeopardizing our health. Air pollution continues to destroy our protective ozone layer, causing extreme heat and severe weather events that endanger our safety. The worst mega-droughts on record continue to dwindle our water supply, damaging our crops and imperiling lives. High heat combined with severe drought continue to cause massive wildfires, destroying our forested lands, threatening our homes, and further degrading our air quality.
Arizona is currently the 4th fastest-warming state and Phoenix the 2nd fastest-warming city in the nation. Our environment, our health, and our safety will continue to deteriorate unless we elect candidates Mundel, Stanfield and Tovar who support access to clean energy throughout our state.

Mark Kelly is a Leader by Marie Nibel
I want the next US Senator from Arizona to be a decent, articulate, honorable person. I want that person to make decisions based on their principles and vote according to those principles, even if it doesn’t align with their party leadership. I want them to support insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, to protect the environment, to actively fight climate change and to follow science when dealing with issues of health. I want them to have a demonstrated track record of independence and leadership.
The only person who fits this profile is Mark Kelly, a decorated veteran, combat pilot and astronaut with a solid track record.
I am tired of our current junior Senator saying that she supports protection of people with pre-existing conditions, voting over and over to end the Affordable Care Act, while voting for the Republican plan which does not offer that protection.
I want a leader, Mark Kelly.

TIME FOR SERIOUS THOUGHT By Thea Chalow
Are you an older Republican who’s concerned because Donald Trump seems more focused on disrupting the election than protecting you from COVID-19?
Are you a conservative, who’s worried your mailed prescriptions will be lost or delayed due to Trumpublican sabotage of the Postal Service?
Are you a stay-at-home mom who’s offended that Trump thinks “suburban housewives” are all prejudiced racists opposed to public housing?
Are you a devout Christian who cringed when Trump used the Bible as a prop in a photo-op?
Are you a compassionate conservative who feels your humanity includes caring about the future of the planet and its climate?
Are you a responsible gun owner who thinks weapons of war belong with armies and not the mentally ill?
If you are, I urge you to give serious thought to voting for Joe Biden and Democratic candidates who want to restore the soul of our nation by bringing back decency, honesty and unity.

A Faulty Strategy by Misty Atkins
The RNC strategy is to make Republicans fear a hypothetical four years under a President Biden. Let’s look at actual events from just one year under President Trump’s watch:
The only way to combat this deadly regime is to VOTE AGAINST IT!
The RNC strategy is to make Republicans fear a hypothetical four years under a President Biden. Let’s look at actual events from just one year under President Trump’s watch:
- More than 100,000 people have died from Coronavirus directly due to Trump’s mismanagement and refusal to listen to expert advice.(1)
- A second outbreak caused schools to remain virtual, businesses to shut down and the highest unemployment since the Great Depression which decimated our economy and could have lasting effects far into the future.(2)
- Failure to deal with the aftermath of California fires that have left over 1,000 with nothing and untold ramifications from hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.(3)
- Violence is erupting in our streets and the death toll is rising from police shootings with no end to protests in sight.
- Vigilantes are encouraged to murder people in cold blood after glorifying the actions of Mark and Patricia McCloskey.
- A border patrol policy separated infants and children from their parents.
- Tax cuts ended up mostly helping wealthy Americans. (4)
The only way to combat this deadly regime is to VOTE AGAINST IT!

Extra Postage Not Advised on Ballot Mail According to a recent statement from the Pima County Recorder’s office, “The barcode on our Business Reply Mail yellow envelope means ballots are rapidly separated from other mail and are actually processed faster than regular first class mail; the Recorder’s office picks up these ballots Monday through Saturday mornings at the Main post office.” Placing an extra stamp on your yellow ballot return envelope will require it to be hand sorted and will delay the process. Mark and mail your ballot early then track its receipt and signature verification online at recorder.pima.gov. Ballots will be mailed out on October 7th. Please notify the recorders office if it’s not received within a couple days. As an alternative to mail, ballots in signed and sealed envelopes may be dropped off at any of the early polling places or drop boxes listed on the recorder’s website between October 7th and 30th. GO VOTE.

Trump Doesn't Deserve to Be President by Lois Postil
Once again, our President makes disrespectful comments followed by lies and denials about those comments. Once again, our President has said things that are disparaging to our brave military members. He called U.S. soldiers injured or killed in war “losers,” questioned the country’s reverence for them and expressed confusion over why anyone would choose to serve. This follows his unacceptable comments about John McCain, who suffered greatly as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Of course, the White House has called his comments “patently” false. This is the typical walking back of controversial, false and cruel statements made by this President. Comments like these are especially egregious coming from someone who went to extraordinary lengths to avoid service in the military during the Vietnam War. As a veteran myself I find his comments offensive and unacceptable. He does not deserve to be President.

We Don't Have to Put Up With This by Kathleen Pastryk
We keep saying and thinking "only seventy-some days till election,"
but mid-August till past mid-January is more than five months.
Trump and his administration can continue their daily atrocities for
all of that time.
Even if Joe Biden and Kamala Harris win, come January, will we
have any shred of democracy left?
Why is there no effort to apply the 25th Amendment or restart
impeachment? It's easy to blame the R's, but why are the Democrats
so complacent, acting as if all of this chaos is acceptable? It's not!
Democrats and independents should be exposing every offense that
has been committed against the world and the American people---and
who knows?
The public may rally around the idea of getting rid of they the whole kit
and kaboodle.
As we used to say in New Jersey, "Hey, you never know." Unless
you try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

McSally Wants to Suppress Voters by Margo Nichols
I contacted McSally about the Postal Service. I was shocked that the USPS was not among the topics to be selected for comment or concern. Does this mean that she is unconcerned about the current administration’s attempts to dismantle a service that is critical to many of her constituents who rely on the Postal Service for their medications, Social Security checks, election ballots etc.?! The assault on the USPS could cripple efforts to keep people from endangering their health while exercising their civic right and duty to vote this fall! If Trump can gut the USPS, literally removing sorting machines, collection boxes, and firing all the experienced management, all these efforts could be for naught. Trump admits that he is doing this because he is afraid if people can vote by mail, he will lose. Is McSally supporting this demagogue? This is urgent! So is relief for those without jobs or losing their homes. We need leaders to get back to Washington and the work of Congress, not hold townhalls.

Gov. Ducey Saves Embers, Gets Praised by Kenn Block
Gov. Doug Ducey goes to the White House for a session in the big yellow chair with Dr. Deborah Birx and First Tenant. He forgets to wear his mask during this session, yet he receives much praise for a job well done to save Arizona from the pandemic. Save the embers!
Facts are the governor left most of the decisions to the local officials, when he was not standing in the way of important decisions. Now the medical doctors are asking for the state medical director to resign due to a poor job saving people of Arizona. Sounds more like spreading ashes on the truth than praise. Could it be the president was looking for electoral votes and political cover for his political puppet, Martha McSally?
The White House meeting was not about saving “embers” but dousing the truth during a bad pandemic in Arizona and the nation. In the language of the fire service, this meeting was about saving political assets.

3 ACC Seats Up for Grabs: Sharp Contrasts Exist by Eileen Hollowell
This November Arizona voters will select three members to the 5 member Arizona Corporation Commission. The Arizona Constitution requires that the Commission members be elected by the people. The Commission has broad powers to regulate utility companies, securities, business incorporations and pipelines. Three Republicans, and three Democrats are on the ballot. If the Republicans win, the Commission will continue to be a “captive” of the large utility companies. It will continue to resist efforts to use renewable energy sources. It will favor rate hikes for small utility customers and promote “deregulation” policies favored by the companies it is supposed to regulate. The three Democratic candidates— Bill Mundell, Shea Stanfield and Anna Tovar favor the use of renewable energy. Because they are not the beneficiary of large corporate donations, they will resist the efforts of the big utility companies to make the Commission a toothless regulator. Please keep these contrasts in mind when you mark your ballots.

Down Ballot Races Matter! by Eileen Hollowell
The 2020 election provides an opportunity to shift the Arizona Legislature away from Republican domination. Oro Valley is in LD 11. Its current House representatives are two conservative mid-west transplants who are active with ALEC, a conservative organization funded by the Koch brothers to pass “model” state legislation including promoting charter schools and deregulating environmental protections. Both opposed Governor Ducey’s stay at home order and both have questioned public health guidelines on mask wearing and social distancing. The sole Democratic candidate for the AZ House in LD11 is Felipe Perez. Felipe is a native Arizonan who put himself through undergraduate and medical school. He supports fully funding Arizona public schools, protecting the environment and promoting policies economically advantageous for all Arizonans not just business interests. As a Doctor he can be trusted to follow scientific recommendations on how Arizona can manage the pandemic. You can learn more about Felipe at: https://perez4Arizona.com. Vote!

Your Vote is Too Important to Leave to Chance By Joe Alexander / Jacolyn Marshall
Many states, including Arizona, have closed neighborhood polling sites, establishing Vote Centers in their place. Before the 2016 and 2018 elections, Arizona eliminated 320 neighborhood sites. This year 80 additional sites have been eliminated in Maricopa County alone. Located in densely populated areas, Vote Centers force voters in less populated areas to travel long distances, resulting in scheduling and transportation issues. By replacing dozens of neighborhood sites, a single Vote Center creates extremely long lines for voters. In Georgia’s recent primary election, voters waited 5 hours to cast their ballot, sharply increasing their chance of contracting Covid-19.
As Arizona’s infections continue to rise, there is an ever-increasing possibility of voters being quarantined on Election Day or discovering their polling site has been unexpectedly closed due to a lack of poll workers, leaving voters unable to vote.
For many, choosing to vote in person is no longer a viable option. Visit Service.Arizona.com before July 24 and request a mail-in ballot to guarantee that your voice is heard.

RECONSIDER PARTY LINE VOTING by Thea Chalow
Are you a historically Republican voter who’s dismayed by what’s happened to our country under Trump? If so, join like-minded peers (Republican Voters Against Trump, The Lincoln Project, 43 Alumni for Biden, etc.) and vote outside your comfort zone to restore the soul of our nation. Vote for Joe Biden, not because you agree with his entire agenda, but because he’s a decent man who cares about this nation and its people.
Similarly, in state elections, rather than voting the Republic party line for the Trumpian politics of LD-11 Representatives Vince Leach, Mark Finchem, and Bret Roberts, consider voting for decency and caring. Felipe R Perez MD grew up in rural Arizona and worked his way through school to become a Family Medicine physician. A lifelong Arizonan who believes in giving back, he’s running for Representative in LD-11 to fix healthcare, improve public education, help seniors, and protect the environment. I urge you to give him your consideration.

LD 11 Rep Mark Finchem Does Not Share My Values by Carol Fiore
If you’ve ever wondered why LD 11 State Representative Mark Finchem doesn’t share your values, follow him on Facebook. Spoiler alert! It will hurt.
You’ll find name-calling, bullying, conspiracy theories, science denial, false information (Facebook slapped a warning on his COVID 19 post), and utter contempt toward anyone with middle-of-the-road to liberal views. As an unfalteringly loyal Trump supporter, Finchem spins negative White House stories into something about Obama, Pelosi, or Hillary’s emails.
Last year, I met with Rep. Finchem and when I asked about his particularly hostile legislation concerning public education, he remarked, “No one called to object.”
I object. I comment on his Facebook page because he needs to know there’s at least one person who thinks his agenda is hateful, racist, divisive, and downright dangerous.
Fortunately, there is an ethical, highly-qualified alternative. Put a doctor in the AZ House; vote for Dr. Felipe Perez.

Take the Risk Out of Voting by Jackie Marshall
Many states, including Arizona, have closed neighborhood polling sites, establishing Vote Centers in their place. Before the 2016 and 2018 elections, 320 neighborhood sites were eliminated. This year 80 sites have been closed in Maricopa County alone. Located in densely populated areas, Vote Centers force voters in less populated areas to travel longer distances, causing scheduling and transportation issues. By replacing numerous neighborhood sites, a single Vote Center creates extremely long lines for voters. In Georgia’s recent primary election, voters waited 5 hours to cast their ballot, sharply increasing their chance of contracting Covid-19.
As Arizona’s number of infections continue to rise, there is an ever-increasing possibility of voters being quarantined on Election Day or discovering their polling site has been unexpectedly closed due to a lack of poll workers, leaving them unable to vote.
For many, choosing to vote in person is no longer a viable option. Visit Service.Arizona.com today and request a mail-in ballot to guarantee that your voice is heard.

WE NEED A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE by Thea Chalow
Rep. Mark Finchem, LD-11, wants the definition of COVID-19 “cases” limited to ONLY those people hospitalized by the virus. His reason is that reporting the actual number of people testing positive amounts to “sensationalism” that’s “irresponsible.”*
Like Trump, he blames increased testing for “inflating” case numbers, ignoring the fact that the number of people testing positive is increasing more rapidly than the rate of testing.**
Following Finchem’s logic, all who test positive but have no symptoms—people likely to be infection super-spreaders—would NOT be counted. People sick at home with mild to severe symptoms—NOT counted. People in remote areas that die at home—NOT counted.
Finchem’s “ill”-logic is a feeble attempt at manipulating data to obscure the Republican failures to protect the health of Arizona residents.
In November, LD-11 Democrats, Independents, and Republicans sickened by Trumpism can vote for LD-11 candidate Dr. Felipe R. Perez and put a real MD in the House.

Mask Wearing by Sue Garcia
Two friends of mine have had recent uncomfortable confrontations in local grocery stores as they tried to follow CDC guidelines for social distancing while shopping for necessities. In each instance, the request to follow established guidelines was seen as an attack on the current political administration instead of a common sense approach to protecting the public health in our shared community.
Masks are not a political issue, however, they seem to have stirred up a lot of controversy.
We are living in a time when our citizens are desperate for leaders who set real policy and care about the people. Now more than ever “we the people” need to care for and about each other. My mask protects you - Your mask protects me.

Ducey's Report Card by Lea Anderton
How would you grade Governor Ducey on his handling of the Covid-19 Pandemic? According to John Hopkins University who has been keeping the statistics, the seven day increase in new cases as of today, June 9th is 30%. Think we’ve tried to return to normal too soon? The Governor started out fairly well on March 11 declaring a Public Health Emergency, on March 15 closing the schools, and on March 31 issuing a stay-at-home order.
Federal guidelines to re-open the economy require a 14 day decrease in new cases which hadn’t happened when stay-at-home order expired May 15. The University’s Pandemic Modeling suggested a possible May 31 opening but after President Trump visited a Phoenix mask production facility on May 5,
the Governor scrapped the University’s Model in favor of the federal guidelines, which he didn’t actually follow either. On May 12 he said, “ We are clearly on the other side of this pandemic.” and allowed the stay-at-home order to expire May 15. Oh, really? Arizona has reached 1047 deaths and rapidly rising. I’d give him a “d”.

We Have a Shared Responsibility by Dr. Jacolyn Marshall
Covid-19 threatens everyone, including children and young adults. With a long incubation period it spreads its contagion far and wide before symptoms appear. Responding to a new outbreak, South Korea’s contact-tracing program identified its source: one pre-symptomatic 29-year-old who frequented several nightclubs, infected 102 others, and was responsible for 5,500 potential new cases.
A clot-producing disease, Covid-19 causes tissue damage throughout the body. Its large vessel clots cause strokes, heart attacks, and blockages in the lungs, kidneys and legs. Some of these attacks prove fatal, others lead to long-term disability.
With no immunity to help us, no vaccine to protect us, and no cure to save us, Arizona should be working hard to contain the virus. Instead we rank 49th in testing and have no plans for contact-tracing or isolation.
It is up to each of us to stop its spread. We have a shared responsibility to deny Covid-19 its next victims by wearing a mask and staying beyond its reach

What’s McSally’s Plan? By Eileen Hollowell
Senator McSally has long voted to abolish the Affordable Care Act. She and her fellow Republicans, including the President who seeks to undo anything implemented by Obama, may soon prevail. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the 18 State Attorney Generals (including Arizona’s) who have challenged the law, their fervent wish will be fulfilled. Then what?
Does McSally have a plan to provide insurance for the almost 154,000 Arizonans who will immediately lose their coverage? Will surviving Covid 19 mean you have a pre existing condition, which will permit private insurers, no longer constrained by the ACA, to deny you coverage or make you pay higher premiums for surviving a pandemic? McSally has great medical coverage as a veteran and U.S. Senator. But neither she nor the President has a plan to provide all Americans with adequate heath insurance. Keep that in mind when you cast your vote this November.

A Better Idea by Margo Nichols
Why is Donald Trump terrified of vote-by-mail? We know. We’ve seen him say, “…if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”
If this is true, why do Republicans pursue policies with such narrow support? Rather than limiting who votes, maybe a better idea would be to broaden their appeal.
Perhaps they should re-think passing tax cuts that mostly benefit companies and the 1%. Re-think repealing Obamacare health insurance for people with pre-existing conditions. Re-think opposition to common sense gun regulations. Re-think starving public school budgets to line the pockets of private schools. Re-think tossing environmental rules that keep our air and water clean. Re-think the need to address man-made components of climate change. The list could go on.
If Republicans were to reassess who they represent, we all might benefit. If they don’t, then maybe voters will wisely “throw the bums out” by voting for Democratic candidates in the next election.

Future of High Court Should Get You to the Polls By Joseph Alexander
Are you a progressive voter considering sitting out the 2020 election because your preferred candidate isn't heading the ticket? Your vote is critically important, if for no other reason than the composition of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is 87, and Justice Stephen Breyer, who is 81, will likely retire. If Trump wins re-election and Mitch McConnell keeps control of the Senate, we face an unprecedented 7-2 right-wing majority on the court. Republican installed justices will have the last word on U.S. law for generations.
Long into the future, such a court could negate every bit of progressive legislation passed by future Congresses for Democratic presidents.
This 7-2 majority would be the devastating culmination of decades of Republican schemes that have already packed the appellate courts. What faces us is the loss for many years of our ability to protect our fundamental rights and hard-fought progressive victories. Please vote!

Letter: Improve Voter Experience by Linda and Kenn Block
In response to "The left's all-mail voting fantasy must be put to rest."
The GOP chairman's opinion in the Star was singing the party song, but it was flat. Even the GOP president used a mail ballot in a Florida election. Good for one good for all!
Look for states that use the mail ballot, Oregon is an example, it works and is a great example. Mail ballots can be sent USPS, dropped off any polling place, or even better placed in a secure ballot box in a public location, library, town hall, or other public secure location and collect by election officials. Drop boxes would avoid the expense of postage, a fiscal improvement the GOP should like.
Is the GOP afraid of expanded democracy? Afraid the electorate will move them out of power, how democratic. They have the option to change views on health care , education, voting rights, social programs. The governed will decide who the leaders will be, let the people decide!Truth and voting power will set us free!

Our War against Covid-19 by Jackie Marshall
Well before the enemy arrived on our shores, our defense system had been severely compromised. In 2018 our Commander-in -Chief cut funding from the CDC’s Epidemic Prevention Activities in 39 out of 49 countries, including China. Our national battle plan, the Global Health Security Agenda and the Playbook for Early Response were shelved, and the Global Health Security team of elite scientists who would have coordinated the fight against the enemy were fired and not replaced.
Without a comprehensive strategy or tactics of his own, our Commander in Chief was destined to fail from the very beginning. In January, US intelligence agencies’ warnings about the dangers the pandemic crisis in China, its implications for the US, and the necessity to act quickly were ignored.
Hence, our Commander-in -Chief failed to employ our only offensive tactic. When the World Health Organization offered to provide the US with Covid-19 tests, tests that would have allowed us to identify, isolate, and contain the enemy, they were declined. Because it would be months before our own tests were available, the enemy was allowed to take the field without resistance. With the opportunity for a coordinated offense lost, our only hope resided in a well-coordinated and vigorous defense.
Even as our first confirmed cases were being identified, our Commander-in -Chief ignored, denied, and discredited their existence. In January, he sent 17.5 tons of medical supplies to China, yet our Commander-in -Chief failed to take decisive action on our behalf. As scientists and journalists bombarded the airwaves with hourly updates of the enemy’s advance, our Commander-in -Chief finally felt compelled to act, closing our borders from known sources of disease. Nevertheless, in early February, disregarding the CDC’s recommendation against it, he authorized the return of 14 Covid-19 infected citizens to the US aboard the same plane as 300 healthy individuals, an epidemiological disaster in the making. In doing so, our Commander-in -Chief colluded with the enemy, strengthening its presence on the field.
Our Commander-in -Chief failed to muster his troops, our scientific experts and military personnel skilled in the logistics, who could provide the vigorous defense we needed. He consistently failed to provide credible intelligence, explicit guidelines, personal protection, and medical supplies to his frontline soldiers. Nor did he establish a clear and equitable supply line, some states receiving all the medical supplies they requested, others only half, and some a mere fraction.
Ultimately, our Commander-in -Chief chose to abdicate his authority entirely and abandon the field, leaving all fifty states and five territories to battle it out on their own. The result has been predictably chaotic and counter-productive. Some governors did institute statewide closures, social distancing and self-isolation as the only means of halting the enemy’s advance. Lacking any direct mandate to do so, some governors did not. Eight states in the continental US still have no such restrictions, another epidemiological disaster in the making.
Ten weeks after the enemy’s arrival, our Commander-in -Chief proclaimed a State of Emergency, and then inexplicably turned over our Strategic National Stockpile to private companies, further complicating and slowing supply lines. Every step along the way, our Commander-in -Chief has been derelict in his duty to protect and defend us from the enemy.
We are now in full retreat. Much of the nation is hunkered down in place, hoping that our remaining frontline soldiers - the scientists and journalists who provide accurate information, those who deliver essential services for our maintenance and well-being, and our medical professionals who operate with limited and dwindling resources - will save us.
Meanwhile, the number of wounded keeps growing. The number of casualties keeps mounting. Having lost this war on every front, we can only hope to survive it.

Where is the Governor? by Kenn Block
Arizona needs a leader for a governor. Someone who is strong, bold and in public to lead us during the COVID-19. A person that is visible and in person leading us to not be in fear for the future. A leader that is visible in the media making policy in person and not through a paid mouth piece, a spokesman. Where can we find the governor, is he hiding in a closed ice cream store, behind a curtain, or attending a Chamber of Commerce function? He should take a lesson from the governor of New York state. Be public governor. Either lead boldly, follow great leaders or get out of the way. Where will Arizona find you Doug Ducey, in front, following, or out of the way?

We Need Mail In Voting By Misty Atkins
Everyone saw the footage from the election in Wisconsin. Images of the state’s Assembly Speaker, Robin Vos, dressed in full Personal Protective Equipment assuring residents they were “incredibly safe to go out.” Needless to say, it was not a reassuring scene and indescribably hypocritical. Because there was a ridiculously small number of voting places, people had to stand in line for up to 2 1/2 hours to assert their civic right. Is this what we are to expect for the election of our president in November? President Trump, again, grossly misinforms Americans by claiming that people “sit in their living rooms and fill out thousands of ballots… Everyone should go to the polls.” There is absolutely no data to support that, but he has fallen back on his usual strategy of “say it until they believe it.” Meanwhile, he is an early voter who doesn’t go to the polls himself. Every American should have the ability and the option to vote by mail. Go to “ServiceArizona” to update your registration online and get on the Permanent Early Voter list.

Arizona House Republicans Are Trying to Limit Our Rights by Eileen Hollowell
A bill introduced by LD 11 Representative Mark Finchem seeks to gut the citizen initiative process in Arizona. The bill asks voters to approve a new requirement for citizens to get something on the ballot. Currently the requirement is that signatures must be collected from a percentage of all voters—10% for an initiative and 15% for an amendment to Arizona’s constitution. Finchem’s bill requires that signatures be gathered in the same percentage amounts but in each of Arizona’s 30 legislative districts. That requirement would be almost impossible for citizen groups to meet because of the cost involved in gathering signatures from each district. That is, of course, the result Finchem seeks. Republican legislators do not like direct action by the electorate because it has resulted in things like an independent commission drawing legislative districts and increases in the minimum wage. Do not allow them to take away your rights. Tell your legislators to vote no on HCR 2039. If it makes it to the ballot—vote no!

Biden-Sanders Debate Was Telling by Kathleen Pastryk
Joe Biden is a nice guy, Mr. Congeniality in fact, but is this the demeanor that will beat Donald Trump? People who vote in the Democratic primaries say that their highest priority is choosing the candidate who can beat Trump. Beats me how they can favor Biden over Bernie Sanders. They complain that Bernie is too gruff, but isn’t “gruff” what’s needed in upcoming contests with our present president? Bernie is angry, but we know where that anger is coming from.
I am afraid that Biden will treat Trump like his esteemed colleague and defer to his office. Besides, Joe hasn’t articulated good ideas like Bernie has, such as Medicare for All. I hope everyone watching the debate realizes that Bernie’s demands are warranted. Biden needs to explain his positions on many issues that have heretofore been glossed over, and he needs to shelve that “Mr. Nice” disposition.

Save Our Schools by Di Alexander
Our Arizona Legislature is at it again! In the 2018 election, Arizona voters put a stop to the expansion of the ESA (Empowerment Scholarship Accounts) voucher program by voting for Prop 305. Do our legislators not understand what the voters were saying? Now, in addition to wanting to expand the program, they are trying to make it legal to use these funds across state lines in five adjoining states. They make it sound like a good thing as it would allow students in poor schools bordering these states to cross over to attend their schools. Wouldn’t it be better to use that money to improve our schools that so badly need it? Arizona schools currently rank 49th in median teacher pay, there are 1700 classrooms without permanent teachers, and have the highest rate of teacher turnover in the United States. Our Arizona Legislature is at it again! In the 2018 election, Arizona voters put a stop to the expansion of the ESA (Empowerment Scholarship Accounts) voucher program by voting for Prop 305. Republicans Setting Up More Hurdles to Voting by Eileen Hollowell
The Arizona Legislature is back in session and Republicans are again introducing bills to make it harder for Arizonans to vote.
Senate Bill 1092 makes it harder for people who miss the deadline to mail in their early ballots to deposit those ballots at a polling place. It limits who can drop off such ballots. It also requires submission of an affidavit by the person delivering the ballot attesting to their relationship with the voter. If the voter herself drops off her ballot, she has to show ID even though she will have already signed her ballot attesting to who she is.
Notwithstanding a lack of evidence of voter fraud in Arizona, Republicans assert that SB 1092 'safeguards' the voting process. If they really care about protecting our democracy, Republicans would introduce bills to protect our voting system from being hacked by foreign governments. But somehow that issue is not worthy of Republican attention.

Why the Census Matters by Lea Anderton
The 2020 Census is fast upon us. Why do we care? Arizona will receive from the Federal Government approximately $2000 for every man, woman and child living in Arizona and counted in the Census. That
money is then used by the state to fund health, welfare and education programs including Medicaid, Head Start, Block grants for community mental services, Food Stamp assistance, Energy subsidies for the poor and many other programs which make our quality of life here in Arizona better. In addition, the data is used to plan for the future: where shall roads and schools and hospitals be built?
In mid March the Census Bureau will mail a post card with a unique identifying number to every household in the U.S. and our territories with instructions to compete the census questionnaire by mail, phone, or online. There is no citizenship or legal status question and it is required by law that we all complete and return the questionnaire. And it will benefit us all!

Dark Money by Sue Garcia
Jan 28, 2020Our democracy depends on free and fair elections. Voters need to make informed decisions based on facts and solid information. But a flood of dirty/dark money is muddying the waters, undermining the foundation of our democracy. Current law permits so-called "social welfare organizations" to spend unlimited money to influence voters. They are not required to disclose who funds them. Vast sums were spent pushing expansion of Arizona's school voucher program. Did the money come from owners of for-profit schools or from vested individuals who run private religious schools. Who wants to siphon money from public education? We'll never know. Anonymous donors are permitted to hide behind dirty/dark money organizations. I urge my fellow Arizonans to go to https://outlawdirtymoney.com to find out where they can sign the Stop Political Dirty Money Amendment petition. This is a nonpartisan effort to secure the people's right to know.

Vouchers Don't Work by Misty Atkins
On the surface, school vouchers may seem appealing in a country where underfunded schools struggle to meet the needs of its students. But vouchers that help students access private schools that don’t have to meet the same standards and regulations as public schools is not the answer. Vouchers usually cover only partial tuition, leaving a large chunk which may be daunting for middle or lower income families, but clearly benefiting the wealthy. Worse yet, SB1224 would take tax-payer money from local districts and channel it into private schools which aren’t necessarily even in Arizona. Last year, Amphitheater Unified District lost 81 students to private schools and took with them nearly a million dollars from the general education fund. SB1224 would allow Arizona to send its state tax dollars to private schools in other states. This is a bad bill for an already stressed education system.

The Real "Art of the Deal" has Now Been Revealed by Kathleen Pastryk
Republicans keep pushing the envelope until now they admit the quid pro quo was real. But so what? Repeated attempts to manipulate the new, young Ukrainian President weren't blameworthy anymore than "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine," an informal, time-honored business agreement. How can these actions be considered crimes high crimes or misdemeanors? Lying and prevaricating? Strong arm tactics? Part of the "Art if the Deal." It was all done, Republicans now insist, as part of their project to get Trump reelected for the good of America. Yes, the good of America is all they really want. Thus a benevolent motive renders all of the House of Representatives' accusations unimpeachable. One has to wonder, then -- what could possibly be impeachable? Anything? Trump probably had it right when he boasted that with so many loyal followers he could get away with murder.
More witnesses? Why muddy the waters?

Polling Site Closures by Jacolyn Marshall
In 2013 the US Supreme Court eliminated part of the Voting Rights Act which prevented states from changing election policies in order to disenfranchise minorities. Without any uniform standard, Arizona closed 212 polling sites statewide prior to the 2016 election.
Although every county was affected, the number of closures and their impact have varied widely. Cochise County (6,219 mi²) with 20 people per mi² dropped from 49 polling sites in 2012 to just 18 in 2016, a 65% decrease. Although comparable in size, Pinal County (5,374 mi²) with 80 people per mi² dropped from 98 sites to 96, a 2% decrease. Likewise, Navajo County (9,960 mi²) with 10 people per mi² experienced a 25% decrease; whereas Maricopa County (9,200 mi²) with 470 people per mi² a 5% decrease. Voters in sparsely populated areas have sustained a disproportionate number of closures, hindering their right to vote.
To date, Arizona has closed 320 polling sites, the second highest in the nation.

Biased Reporting by Eileen Hollowell
Somehow the New York Times managed to cover the Tucson impeachment demonstration with both pictures and copy, which accurately showed that there were hundreds of pro impeachment demonstrators and a handful of pro Trump demonstrators. We pay the hefty subscription price for the print version of the Star because we want accurate local news but that is not what the Star provided. The print version of the Star had no article at all, just a misleading picture with a caption. As another writer noted, even the online photos of the demonstration were focused on confrontations between pro impeachment and anti impeachment demonstrators of which there were few. Perhaps the Star’s editorial staff has now decided it will not just favor conservative opinion and letter to the editor writers but it will also slant its reporting of the facts to appease them. It is indeed a sad time for journalism.

Impeachment
If Congressional Democrats were the craven people that Fox News and other defenders of Trump assert, then Democrats would not have risked undertaking impeachment hearings. It is increasingly clear that the Republican controlled Senate will use any impeachment trial to attack the Bidens and promote the discredited assertion that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 elections. Advancing Articles of Impeachment to the Senate, where Republicans will turn the trial into a series of pro Trump sound bites, is, therefore, perilous. But given the uncontested facts, testified to by Trump’s own ambassador among others, Democrats have little choice. To ignore Trump’s behavior would be an abdication of their oath of office to uphold the Constitution. Sometimes doing the right thing is risky but, if this country is to survive, its elected representatives have to be willing to take that risk.

Arizona is Failing Our Students and Our Economy by Jacolyn Marshall
Public schools were created to serve and maintain our society. Yet, year after year, our Arizona legislature continues to fail our students, our economy, and our state.
In 1990, Arizona ranked 34th out of 50 states in per pupil funding for public education; in 2009 Arizona ranked 26th; Arizona now ranks 48th. Year after year, we pay our state and federal taxes to support public education; year after year, those funds are systematically diverted elsewhere. Since education supports all other occupations, this misuse of public funds harms a majority of our students, our work force, and our ability to attract new business.
Of all the children in Arizona, 85% attend public schools. Every one of those students, every one of their underpaid teachers in overcrowded classrooms, every one of those schools struggling to provide adequate textbooks and safe facilities is being shortchanged. Consequently, all of us are being shortchanged. We must demand that our legislators restore funding for our public schools. Arizona’s future depends on it.

Arizona’s War on Public Education by Dr. Jacolyn Girolamo Marshall, EdD
The latest attack on education is an initiative entitled “Arizona Classroom Code of Ethics for K-12 Public Schools," proposed by legislators who previously failed to pass similar legislation. If approved, the initiative would prohibit teachers of any subject, including history, to speak positively or negatively about elected officials, political parties, judicial decisions, legislative acts, presidents, or political issues, unless those historical matters occurred fifty years ago. In effect, teachers could discuss only local, state, national, and world events that occurred before 1970, and only leaders who served before then. This proposal is entirely without merit. It is irrational. Public school teachers would be unable to do their jobs. The 85% of students attending public schools would be prohibited from learning about every historical event since the Vietnam era and every political figure since Nixon. This initiative would ensure that students remain ignorant of the world in which they live and will eventually help govern. Since politics refers to the total complex of relations among people within a society, it touches on every aspect of our daily lives. Politics is everywhere.
It is in violation of the State Board of Education which is responsible for the establishment of specific standards required of our schools. “Professional Teaching Standards,” page 41, states that teachers shall engage learners in applying content knowledge to real world problems, fostering innovation and problem-solving in local and global contexts, and expanding their understanding of local and global issues. This cannot happen in the intellectual vacuum proposed by this initiative.
It is in violation of the First Amendment which prohibits government from making laws to abridge freedom of speech, including political speech and speech in schools. Writing the majority opinion in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (1969), Justice Abe Fortes stated that neither teachers nor students “shed their constitutional right to freedom of speech at the schoolhouse gate.” Furthermore, “state-operated schools may not be enclaves of totalitarianism. Students are possessed of fundamental rights which the State must respect. They may not be regarded as closed-circuit recipients of only that which the State chooses to communicate.”
It defies logic. There is nothing right or reasonable about prohibiting teachers from imparting knowledge or restricting students’ access to it. Moreover, why does this so-called “code of ethics” only apply to public schools? If it were what it purports to be, surely the authors would include private and parochial schools as well. By targeting public schools alone and, by attempting to deceive voters by mislabeling their true intentions to further harm public education, the authors and promoters of this initiative demonstrate that they are as unethical as their proposal.
Whether the majority of our students are well educated or not, whether they have learned the lessons that history has taught us or not, whether they are creative problem solvers or not, they will eventually become our policymakers. If our state legislators persist in defunding and attacking public education, they do so at the risk of their futures and ours.
As conscientious voters we must not approve this initiative. Instead, we must insist that our legislators abide by the Constitution and the State Board of Education, that they fully fund public education as required by law, that they, in fact, act in the best interests of the people of Arizona.

DACA by Judy Kay
The president wants to eliminate DACA (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program) and it appears our right-leaning Supreme Court may support him. Liberals often view DACA through a lens of compassion – the Dreamers are innocents lacking legal status through no fault of their own. Conservatives may lean toward a strict interpretation – they’re not here legally, so throw them out. But, taking this hard line approach is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. We’ve already invested in educating these young Dreamers and now they’re entering their most economically productive years. To send them to a country they’ve never known, would be discarding their ability to give back through hard work, paid taxes, and civic involvement. To falsely claim, as the president has, that “some are quite rough, hardened criminals” fails to recognize that DACA guidelines already bar anyone with a felony conviction or serious misdemeanor from participating. So I ask, “Mr. President, where is your compassion for these young people?” But I also ask all conservatives, “How does this program hurt our country when it allows us to reap the benefits of our investment, and profit from the results?”
Free and Fair Elections
Our democracy depends on free and fair elections. Voters need to make informed decisions based on facts and solid information. But a flood of dirty/dark money is muddying the waters, undermining the foundation of our democracy. Current law permits so-called “social welfare organizations” to spend unlimited money to influence voters. They are not required to disclose who’s funding them. For example, vast sums were spent pushing expansion of Arizona’s school voucher program. Did the money come from owners of for-profit schools? Vested individuals who run private Christian, Catholic, Islamic and other religious schools? Who wants to siphon money from public education? We’ll never know. Anonymous donors are permitted to hide behind dirty/dark money organizations.
I urge my fellow Arizonans to go to https://outlawdirtymoney.com to find out where they can sign the Stop Political Dirty Money Amendment petition. This is a nonpartisan effort to secure the people’s right to know.

Voter Fraud
Re: a recent letter concerning efforts by Rep. Finchem and other Republican legislators to “protect against voter fraud”, I looked up Arizona Secretary of State historical election data and the voter fraud convictions by the Arizona Attorney General's Office. There were 20 convictions, 0.00015379% of the votes cast! President Trump, claiming without a shred of proof that millions of people voted illegally in his election, created a Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, now disbanded. Yet, neither he nor our Arizona legislators are doing much to protect against the real threats of attacks on elections by hacking our voting systems, fake ads, or dark money nefarious influences, etc. The proposed legislative measures are about making registering to vote more difficult, not about protecting against fraud. 16 states have automatic voter registration which if available in Arizona would increase registration rates, automatically correct the voter rolls of this and any state from which the registrant has moved and save Arizona money.

Voter Fraud by Eileen Hollowell
The last Arizona legislative session was marked by numerous efforts by Republicans to “protect the integrity” of Arizona’s electoral system by limiting access to voting. I contacted my legislator, Mark Finchem (LD11), to ask for statistics on voter fraud. He provided information showing that, since 2010, there have been 21 convictions/plea agreements mostly for dual voting.
In 2010 over 1.7 million ballots were cast in Arizona; in 2016 over 2.5 million votes. 21 cases out of millions of votes shows that Arizona does not have a voter fraud problem. But Arizona’s voting system, like the rest of the country’s, is highly vulnerable to being attacked by agents of Russia, China and Iran. This is not a partisan issue. Regardless of party or ideology we all want our electoral system to be fair and accurate. Contact your representative and ask them to address the real danger--not one that barely exists.

Automatic Voter Registration a Good Idea by Margaret Nichols
Come January, the legislature will be back in session. Will we again see efforts to dampen turnout among younger, nonwhite and poorer voters?
In 2018, Arizona joined other Republican-controlled legislatures seeking to pass bills which would have the effect of disenfranchising voters, allegedly to prevent voter fraud. However, since 2010, there have been only 21 Arizona convictions/plea agreements related to voter fraud out of about 18 million ballots cast.
To counter the repressive measures coming from our legislature, the Arizona Automatic Voter Registration Initiative may appear on the ballot in Arizona as an initiated state statute on Nov. 3, 2020. If successful, anyone seeking an ID from the DMV would automatically be registered to vote, unless that person opted out. They would simultaneously be disenrolled from a prior address, thus preventing dual voting. Consider signing the ballot initiative. Also, ask your legislators to support democracy and your right to vote.

Every Vote Counts
When doing voter registration it’s concerning when someone declares that they don’t vote because it doesn’t count. As of July 2019 in Arizona, 35% of registered voters are Republicans, 31% are Democrats, and 33% are Independents or other. Our state is nearly divided into thirds by party affiliation which makes it difficult to imagine that votes don’t count. It’s also important to note that Independents play a significant role in our election outcome. Independents, especially those new to our state, may not realize that in order to vote in Democratic Presidential Preference Primary on March 17, 2020, they must be registered as a Democrat. There is no other option. This differs from our other primaries. Registering to vote, changing party affiliation, or updating an address due to a move is easily done online at the county recorder’s website. Voting is our voice and not voting allows someone else to choose for us. Voting does matter.

Voter Suppression
Ideally, the United States of America should have an informed and engaged electorate. But in the
2016 Presidential Election only 61% of eligible voters voted, 87% of registered voters. Why isn’t every
citizen at least 18 years of age registered to vote? Voter suppression is a big contributing factor: requiring a street address for Native Americans who live on reservations with no street address, requiring specific forms of identification not readily available to the poor, elderly or minority population, expunging voter registration for failure to vote in a couple of elections. Seventeen states and The District of Columbia have now adopted Automatic Voter Registration whereby citizens at age 18 or those who have interaction with a public agency such as the motor-vehicle department are automatically registered to vote unless they choose to “opt out”. These laws have proven successful in expanding voter rolls to make sure that every eligible American has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.
Our legislature will be in session again in January, let us as citizens of Arizona put pressure on our representatives to stop trying to suppress the vote. They tried to pass a number of bills this session to do just that such as trying to outlaw anyone from being paid to register voters. Automatic Voter Registration is relatively inexpensive, easy for the voter and will increase voter participation.
Ideally, the United States of America should have an informed and engaged electorate. But in the
2016 Presidential Election only 61% of eligible voters voted, 87% of registered voters. Why isn’t every
citizen at least 18 years of age registered to vote? Free and Fair Elections
Is your representative in the Arizona Legislature trying to prevent you and your neighbors from voting? You might assume that those active in the political process would encourage others to participate. Sadly, the reverse is often true. Voter suppression is alive and well in the Arizona state legislature.
In this year’s legislative session, bills have been introduced that could unfairly deprive Arizonans the right to vote, discriminate against certain citizens, and put costly and unneeded laws on the books.
Representatives have proposed bills that would: drop voters from the Permanent Early Voter List if they fail to vote in 2 consecutive elections (HB1188); require presentation and confirmation of ID’s at early voting centers (HB1072); prohibit early voters from dropping off ballots on election day forcing them to wait in line to cast provisional ballots (HB1046); restrict early emergency voting (HB1090); make it a crime to pay people to register voters unless they work for political parties (HB2616); and call out voters who use of the federal voter registration form (HB2039).
Other bills have been proposed that would restrict democracy by tightening up petitions, initiatives, and referendums.
So, you may think, “What’s the problem with requiring a photo ID to vote? There’s a photo on your driver’s license. Lots of credit cards now have photo ID’s. Even a Costco membership card has your picture on it.” But the fact is, not everyone drives, has credit cards, or shops at Costco. Voter ID laws can deprive voters of their right to vote, reduce participation, and stand in opposition to our country’s long history of including more Americans in the democratic process. Studies have found that 11% of people in the U.S. do not have government-issued photo identification. These voters are disproportionately low-income, racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
Even if a photo ID is offered free by the state, voters still face obstacles getting documentation. For example, the combined cost of getting a duplicate of a birth certificate including fees and travel expenses can range from $75 to $175. For lower-income Americans, people with disabilities, the elderly, or those in rural areas without access to transportation this burden discourages voting. A 2014 Government Accounting Office study found that strict photo ID laws reduce turnout by 2-3 percentage points, which can translate into tens of thousands of votes lost in a single state.
Intentionally or not, voter ID laws are also discriminatory against minority voters who disproportionately lack ID. Nationally, up to 25% of African-American citizens of voting age lack government-issued photo ID, compared to only 8% of whites. And, discrimination continues at the polling place. A Caltech/MIT study found that minority voters are more frequently questioned about ID than are white voters which can leave them feeling intimidated about voting.
When all is said and done, voter ID laws are a solution in search of a problem. Voter impersonation—the only type of fraud that photo IDs can prevent—is extremely rare. A recent study found that, since 2000, there were only 31 credible allegations of voter impersonation – during which time over 1 billion ballots were cast.
So, what can you do? The next time you prepare to vote for your Arizona legislative district’s representative, find out if they support democracy and your right to vote, or if they are trying to discourage you and your neighbors from voting. And, then, vote accordingly!

Dirty Money
We don’t let children take candy from strangers. Anonymous enticements are often corrupt.
But sadly, we do let politicians take candy from strangers. And these anonymous enticements threaten to damage voter’s ability to make sound judgements and corrupt our democracy.
Big money donors can hide behind the shield of so-called 501(c) (4) “social welfare” organizations. These organizations then fund political campaign ads to sway voters for or against certain politicians or ballot measures. But without knowing who’s funding these campaigns, voters are left in the dark. There’s no way to check for bias, verify information accuracy, or hold individuals accountable for slander or libelous content.
This is a non-partisan issue. Both sides, Republican and Democrat, are damaged by this special interest loophole. To shine light on dirty money filling our political candy jar, Arizona voters need a constitutional amendment Securing the People’s Right to Know. Endangered Species Act Attack by Carol Fiore
The latest attack on the Endangered Species Act is amoral.
Species protection has always been science-based, but the Interior Department—under David Bernhardt, a former fossil fuel lobbyist, wants it based on possible lost revenue. Money is king in this administration and possible extinction can’t compete with corporate greed.
More species are threatened than ever before in human history. Climate change is driving some of it—like that of the polar bear. The adorably cute pika still hasn’t been listed by the climate denying Trump administration.
This gutting of the Endangered Species Act—an incredibly important law that has saved most of the species under its protection—should enrage every person who values animals like the bald eagle, humpback whale, Florida manatee, whooping crane, and black-footed ferret. These are just a few of the saved animals.
Demand answers from Senators McSally and Sinema. They both voted to confirm Bernhardt.

Americans Lose With Donald Trump by Misty Atkins
I’ve been scratching my head for three years wondering why Trump supporters continue to stand with him. Donald Trump is an amoral man, by any measure. Evangelicals, how can you watch him tear infants and children from their families and simply turn a blind eye? How can you watch his misogynistic ways, his praise of Neo-Nazi groups, his play-ground style name-calling, his continual lies? Where is your outcry? Farmers, you have lost farms in tariffs and trade wars. Corporations are buying up your generations-old farms. Your children are fleeing your country for a brighter future. Where is your outrage? American workforce, you haven’t seen raises in sometimes decades. Your work load has gotten heavier while your purse is lighter. You can’t retire because you can’t afford health care. Your tax credit never showed up for you, but your bosses took an extra vacation. It didn’t trickle down. Where is your indignation? Big Business Community, yes, you have benefitted greatly. Hate groups, you have really scored. The rest of us are losers in this corrupt and greedy presidency.

Gun Violence
With the ever increasing frequency of mass shootings, I can’t help but ask myself, “What is wrong with us as a people?” What happened to respect for life? Respect and acceptance of people who aren’t just like us? Conflict resolution and anger management? Values and skills that used to be taught in the home, in church and in our schools. Add to that the lethality of assault weapons, large capacity magazines and inadequate back ground checks for would be gun purchasers and it equals 40,00 U.S.deaths by gun last year alone. This includes suicide and accidental death not just murder but nonetheless access to the gun compounds the problem. Oh, that we could return to civility! Short of that, our lawmakers could save lives by enacting reasonable gun control measures. During the 10 year period the Federal Assault Weapons Ban was in effect (1994-2004) mass shootings did decline. Callyour senators and congressman and demand action. Life is too precious to do nothing!

Pay to Play by Chantal Golden
The Center for Security recently held their banquet at Mar-A-Lago. At this gala, a far right group that wants to shape Trump’s public policy became his private customer. This organization has a seemingly harmless name. However, they have put forth ideas that Barack Obama is a Muslim and that unknown evil forces want to overthrow the Constitution and our system of law and order. Their website contains a biased paper on Shariah law in America. Hosting events such as this is nothing more than another conflict of interest associated with Donald Trump. It implies he condones their beliefs. The Washington Post stated in a November 22, 2019 article that this event illustrates the conflict inherent in doing business with such groups.
